"By the time my gun was ready for action, bullets were popping within a foot of my body. I judged the range, pressed the trigger, and turned a stream of lead on anything that resembled a Kraut. Screams of agony came from the foxholes. I ripped the position again, then stalked up the hill to investigate.

A young German, who appeared no older than twenty, sat on the ground; his eyes filled with unspeakable terror. I was on the point of giving him a burst when I noticed that his jaw had been shot off. He tried to say something to me with his half-mouth; and as his tongue quivered, jets of blood spurted from his severed artery. I braced myself against sentiment. I could do nothing for the poor boy except put him out of his misery."
