Painting by William Barnes Wollen (1896). The Battle of Abu Klea took place in January 1885 in an attempt to march across the Bayuda Desert, Sudan, to the aid of General Charles George Gordon besieged at Khartoum by Mahdist forces. Despite the battle ending with a British victory, the column arrived too late to save Khartoum. The Mahdist army captured it two days before their arrival, and General Gordon was dead.
